Overview: This will show you in a few easy steps how to make the ever so popular Abstract Crystal. This is a method I developed that works quite well.

Step 1: Make a sphere and make it editable (by pressing c)

Step 2: Go to STRUCTURE > EDIT SURFACE > CRUMPLE make the settings like this:

Step 3: Your sphere should now be deformed, now click on the polygon tool.

Step 4: Now right click on the deformed sphere and browse down to "Inner Extrude" extrude to your likness. This will almost always yield different results, when you crumple, it doesnt always crumple the same. So your crystal will most likely look different than mine.

Step 5: Slap a matierial on it, perhaps you would like to do some post effects in Photoshop or something, this is what i got:
